Hijackers forced three Venezuelan jetliners carrying 262 people to land in Columbia in a highly coordinated operation Monday, freed 67 of their hostages and then ordered the planes to Honduras and Guatemala. A fourth plane, a Libyan airliner, was commandeered over Italy by three Lebanese Moslems who forced it to land in Beirut, Lebanon. President Reagan rejected on Monday the denial by Col. Moammer Khadafy that Libyan terriorists have been sent to the U. S. to kill government leaders. “I wouldn’t believe a word he says,” Reagan declared. “We have the evidence and he knows it.” Without new spending cuts or tax increases, the federal budget deficit will be $109 billion this year, $152 billion in 1983 and $162 billion in 1984, according to new administration estimates. Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn said Monday that only nine major league clubs made a profit. The Tryon Fireman’s Continued On Back Page Arledge Resigns; Sauve Elected Chairman At the end of 7 December 1981 Polk County Commissioners’ meeting, Ralph Arledge resigned as chairman, due to his work load. He nominated Opal Sauve as the new chairman. Sauve moved that Arledge be Vice Chairman. Both votes were Arledge and Sauve for, Butler against. Jack Bryan of Social Services requested and received money for unexpected items, including the laying of carpeting donated by an individual. He also described the foster care program’s plan for restraint devices for automobiles for children under 50 lbs. Joel Dobbins of Mental Health Services spoke of two sources of money to put in new heating and air conditioning equipment at the Meeting Place. There is $30,000 federal money for elderly citizens, with a $3000 match from the county this year, and an additional $6000 state grant with $6000 match by the county These were voted for the Meeting Place Arledge reported that the name of one individual helped by the Water and Soil Conservation service had been given to him and was available at the county office. Butler spoke highly of the trip around the county which the conservation officers gave Nepalesse visitors and to which Continued On Back Page Beta Student Of The Week Barbie Kuykendall This week’s Tryon Beta student is Miss Barbie Kuykendall. Barbie is the 14 year-old- daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Kuykendall. She also has a younger sister, Tonya who is 11 years old. Barbie is in Miss Crume’s Sth grade. Barbie, along with being Beta Club secretary, is Vice President of her homeroom. Barbie was recently crowned Miss Homecoming Princess for the 1981-82 school year. Barbie is captain of the 7th-8th grade cheerleading squad and plays 7th-8th grade girls basketball. Barbie is a “A” average student and very popular around school. — Wendy Kimpton, reporter Basketball Friday NCSD at Polk Central Landrum at Tryon Work Progressing On Auditorium The Tryon School Board met 7 December, 1981 with Mr. Corbett absent. Mike Brannon reported that work on the auditorium was progressing nicely: the new ceiling has begun, painting and ceiling wiring are completed, stairs are being rebuilt, and the roofing is completed. Mr. Hooker gave the results of the latest competency test: 50 students, 48 juniors and 2 seniors, took the test. Seven failed 1 portion and one failed both portions, six in math, 2 in reading. Dr. Jones outlined the physical education program in K—8 grades and said he was pleased with the program. — League of Women Voters Observer Fire The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to a woods fire in Pacolet Valley Tuesday about 2 p.m. The extent of damage was not known at press time. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Robert Simpson, of Rt. 4, Rutherfordton, are parents of a daughter, Denikka Michele, born Dec. 7th at St. Luke’s Hospital. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Steven Simpson of Rutherford. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dupree Davis of Tryon.
